Have you ever used the Do Not Disturb mode on your smartphone and wondered if it could disrupt your location settings? Granted, the “Do Not Disturb” mode is a lifesaver. Many young adults use it to manage digital overwhelm, avoid spam, and alleviate social anxiety. Professionals, students, and anyone in general can benefit from how it protects their sleep quality, productivity and reduces digital distraction. So, does DND turn off location? Let’s cut through the noise and provide all the insights you need to know.

What does do not disturb mean?

The Do Not Disturb function on your smartphone is a notification management tool. It’s designed to silence all alerts, including text messages, incoming calls, apps, alarms, etc. It was designed to help you avoid distractions, allowing you to work, sleep, or relax. However, it’s not a complete block. You can set up exceptions. This means you can set up to permit calls and messages from your favorite or priority contacts. Furthermore, critical system sounds, such as alarms and emergency alerts, won’t be blocked by your DND mode. There’s also a feature called “Emergency Bypass” that you can set up for specific contacts to make sure their calls ring even when DND is active.

How to put the phone on Do Not Disturb?

Enabling DND mode on your iPhone or Android is easy. However, the exact steps vary slightly between devices, and the versions of your operating system may also change the process. That said, here’s how to do it on both platforms:

Does do not disturb turn off the location?

Now, to the big question, the answer to which is No. Turning on Do Not Disturb mode won’t turn off your phone’s GPS or location services. DND and location tracking are entirely separate systems on your smartphone. The Do Not Disturb mode only manages audio and visual notifications. In contrast, your device’s hardware and privacy settings control location services. So, when you enable the DND mode, apps and services that rely on your location will still function normally. For example:

  • Google Maps navigation: Google Maps will continue to track your location and provide navigation and directional benefits. You can also still receive voice guidance, though audible notifications from other apps will be silenced.
  • Find My iPhone (or Find My Device on Android): If someone is trying to locate your phone using the “Find My” service, DND will not hide your location. Your device will continue to report its real-time or last known location to the service. This is important for events where it’s lost or stolen.

Common myths about DND and location services

Now that we’ve addressed the confusion about Do Not Disturb mode and your location services, let’s talk about other misconceptions you might have.

Confusion with airplane mode

The Do Not Disturb mode and Airplane mode are not the same. The Airplane Mode is designed to turn off all wireless radios, cellular, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. When you turn on the Airplane Mode, this will stop most location services from working. This is because your phone won’t be able to transmit location without a connection. In contrast, DND will not touch wireless radios.

DND can freeze the location on Find My iPhone

The Do Not Disturb mode won’t interfere with the Find My iPhone service. Find My iPhone service is meant to help you continuously track your device location using iCloud.com. So, if you are trying to hide, turning on the Find My iPhone offers a false sense of security

Emergency alerts

Some people worry that DND mode can stop emergency services from accessing their location during a call. This is also false. When you call emergency services, your phone will bypass any DND or silence settings to connect. Furthermore, the government uses advanced systems to combine GPS, Wi-Fi and cell-tower data to pinpoint your location.
